There’s no being on Earth that doesn’t lose hair. In fact, on a daily basis, one can lose anywhere between 50 to a little over a hundred strands of hair. Although it’s pretty normal, many of us are quick to note when we begin losing more hair than we normally do—thus establishing the difference between hair shedding and hair loss.
The American Hair Loss Association tells us that men experience hair loss as they near the age of 50 and 40% of all women will do the same.
While hair shedding is normal and takes place every day, hair loss is when you start noticing that you’re losing far more hair than you do on a daily basis. You begin finding hair in places where you’d never before found hair: on your pillow, strewn about the floor, stuck to the couch, and so on.
But what’s causing it?
This is far more common than you think. Many people can’t really understand why, despite their diets and health, they still lose hair. Chances are that it’s embedded in your DNA. This is particularly true for men with bald spots in their heads.
The hereditary hair loss phenomenon is also more prevalent in men because hair follicles don’t usually go along very well with certain male hormones. These follicles therefore shrink over time and ultimately lead to hair fall, hair loss, and even baldness.
You’ve probably heard of the urban myth that PhD scholars either go bald or grow white hair. There’s truth to this myth. You’ll find countless scholar on Post Graduate Forum discussing how their stressful PhDs are causing severe hair loss.
Stress, then, be it from a post-grad undertaking or otherwise, is a trigger that can cause hair loss. It can also cause your hair to grow more dandruff, and even disturb your digestive cycle which, in turn, has an adverse effect on hair.
We’ve all been through at least one of the problems caused by a hormonal imbalance—acne being the most common affliction. It’s important to note that hormones directly impact hair growth. This shows clearly in men and women, as the female hormone oestrogen is conducive to hair growth whereas the male hormone androgen is not. Upheaval in the amounts or functioning of these hormones can severely affect hair growth.
If you’ve been experiencing hair loss along with hair loss, you probably have the culprit staring right at you. 6 to 12 weeks after a phase of dramatic weight loss, you’ll notice that your hair is falling excessively. This is because you care for the hair—psychologically.
The body couldn’t care less, and if there are limited nutrients inside the body, it won’t waste them on hair (which needs its fair share of nutrients for survival). Hair falls out because the body is redirecting nutrients to other parts and vital organs.
