Colors have a magical power over us and how we perceive things. They can make outfits come alive or bring down your whole look! This is because not all colors are created equal, everyone has their favorite blue or red that complements their skin complexion.
Finding your color not only makes you look good but also saves you time, money and energy through your fashion journey.
So let’s talk about how certain colors complement your skin tone while others don't.
The best place to start is to figure out your skin's undertone and overtone. Once you do that, about half the colors out there are no longer a choice for you. This makes it easier to shop and to decide what to wear on any given day or night.
An undertone color is the hue that lies under your skin. Functionally, it serves as a reference for your skin's tone.
To give you an idea, most people lie in the center of the undertone color spectrum. However, a few people are ‘true neutral’, which means that their skin has the perfect balance between warm and cool tones. Find out what is your undertone color and that’s only half the battle. Consult a skin undertone chart to get a better idea.
With your undertone color, you can rule out any of the opposite tone colors for you. For example, if your skin has a cool undertone, then warm colors are wrong for you, and vice versa.
Neutral undertones include true red, blue, green and yellow.
To find out if you’re true neutral, compare your look in a true white t-shirt and an off-white one. If you have a cooler undertone then you’ll look better in true white. If you're warmer, then offwhite it is.
Another way to find if you're true neutral is to see what color are your veins. If they are match your skin color, then your undertone is true neutral.
Warm undertones - if your veins exhibit a greenish hue, you might have warm undertones. Corals, honey, creams, and olives perfectly suit people with warm undertones.
Cool undertones - if your veins exhibit bluish or purplish hues, you might have cool undertones. Blue, lavender, grays, and emeralds are perfect for people with cool undertones.
It can be tricky to find your overtones. There is much confusion around this topic of undertone and overtone. Undertones and overtones work together to form many different skin tones. Consider that on a color wheel red is directly between blue and yellow.
